The hecatomb continues on the Franco-British border

Since October 8, 8 deaths have been recorded in Calais and the region. Public policies carried out at this border have killed and continue to kill.

On October 8, Meron Brhane, a young Eritrean exile, drowned after attempting to cross the Channel. Since this date, at least 8 people have lost their lives on the Franco-British border.

On November 6, 2023, around 10 p.m., Dinh Anh Nguyen, a 37-year-old Vietnamese exile, died after being hit by a train while walking on the railway tracks. Dinh did not hear the train arriving and the train driver, given the darkness, was unable to do anything to avoid hitting it. This death was not publicized in the media, the information reached the associations through an SNCF security agent met during the evacuation of a camp.

Following a serious knife attack that occurred on October 24, 2023, in Calais, Awad Adam died on Saturday November 11, after several weeks in a coma spent in Calais hospital.

On November 13, 2023, following a fight, Abdelbassit Nourredine Ahmad Mohammad, a 22-year-old Sudanese exile, died after having his throat slit. He was from the town of Gadarif in eastern Sudan, close to the Ethiopian border.

The English Channel dumps bodies onto coastal beaches

A group of around fifteen exiled people were hit by a truck on the night of November 16 to 17, 2023, around 12:30 a.m. Geçsöyler Mehmet Ali and Baysal Recep, of Turkish nationality, died instantly. Four others are injured, one seriously. Mehmet Ali and Recep were from Aksaray, Turkey.

On November 22, a group of around 65 exiles, mostly from Eritrea and Ethiopia, attempted to cross the Channel aboard a boat from Equihen-Plage, in Pas-de -Calais.

After barely 10 minutes of navigation and less than a kilometer from the coast, the boat found itself in difficulty, with water starting to enter the boat. Many passengers were not wearing life jackets. Several people fell into the water, including Mulu and Aman. They could not be saved and died of drowning. Mulu was born on February 8, 1989 and was originally from Ethiopia.

As after each death on the Franco-British border, solidarity activists gathered on Thursday, November 23 in Calais to pay tribute to the victims and denounce the murderous policies implemented for years in this territory.

Monday December 4, an inanimate body was found on Dannes beach, in Pas-de-Calais. According to the authorities, it could be Eskiel, a 37-year-old Ethiopian exile, missing since the November 22 shipwreck off the coast of Equihen.
